RGV Daily Brief: Saturday, October 31, 2026

The Rio Grande Valley closed out October with a mix of public safety, electoral, and political stories that reflect the region's ongoing concerns heading into the November midterm election.

Early voting in Hidalgo and Cameron counties ended Friday with what was described as historic turnout for the 2026 midterm cycle, a period that opened on October 19. The Starr County county judge race, meanwhile, drew coverage for its focus on jobs and infrastructure as voters there prepare to weigh in. On the law enforcement front, a man was arrested in connection with a wrong-way fatal crash south of Harlingen, and separately, a federal ICE agent charged with aggravated assault — stemming from an incident in which he allegedly struck a fleeing Mexican man with his vehicle in Houston — was reported to be planning to turn himself in on Monday, according to his attorney.

Also drawing scrutiny was the Texas parks department's effort to withhold a draft agenda amid concerns over a potential sale of Boca Chica to SpaceX. On the lighter side, McAllen High sophomore running back Cole Morley was named Valley Sports Central's Athlete of the Week, and Harlingen Collegiate High School's Cassie Banda was recognized as Student of the Week.
