RGV Daily Brief: Monday, August 17, 2026

Across the Rio Grande Valley, Monday brought a mix of courtroom developments, public-safety milestones, and cultural discoveries that together reflect the breadth of daily life in the region.

In the courts, jury selection continued in the capital murder trial of Rogelio Martinez Jr., accused in the fatal shooting of a San Benito police lieutenant, while a judge set a $50,000 bail for Heriberto Cazares, a 33-year-old man accused of stabbing a friend multiple times. Separately, a Mission family spoke out ahead of the arraignment of a suspected drunk driver whose actions they say cost them a loved one, a grief that put a human face on roadway dangers the Valley knows too well.

Beyond the courthouse, a Combes police officer was recognized for performing CPR that saved a two-year-old child during an emergency call, and law enforcement personnel from the area gathered at South Padre Island for sexual assault response training. On a different front, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott announced Monday that all construction activity at Big Bend National Park had been halted. Meanwhile, IDEA Palmview marked a milestone by welcoming its first-ever senior class on the first day of school, the Brownsville Public Library's plant exchange continued to grow through community donations, and researchers spotlighted a collection of lost murals by Bartolomé Mongrell with ties to the Rio Grande Valley.
